This is what Matt had to say:

Matt Kinser, a regular volunteer at the Hiddenite Community Helpers Food Pantry, knows the need firsthand in our county. He encourages all to donate during the campaign while donations are matched. “Money donations are in great need as food prices, operating expenses, and client numbers have increased. Volunteers are always needed too, and it’s a blessing to serve others at the pantry,” he says. Matt had this story to share. ‘Just like any other day at the food pantry, I was helping folks get their groceries when I noticed a lady who looked out of place. I approached her and introduced myself. As I helped her shop, I could tell she was trying to make herself small, hiding behind the cart. As I usually do, I asked her a few questions to try and make her more comfortable through conversation. With tears in her eyes and a quiet voice, she said, “I’m not supposed to be here.” At first, I didn’t know how to respond, but then I thought of when I was right where she was. I replied, “You see, I was pretty successful throughout my life, but in 2014, I had spine surgery and couldn’t work. I had to also turn to the food pantry for help.” I told her how nice and kind the people at the pantry were to me and how they treated me with dignity and respect. Then she dried her tears and started telling me her story of how she and her husband were very successful and had plenty of money. While going through divorce, her husband cut her and the kids off completely. She felt embarrassed but didn’t know where else to turn. I spoke up and said, “Well, that’s what we’re here for and there’s no shame in needing help.” We proceeded with getting her groceries and the conversation continued, ending with a smile on her face. It was such a special time that day, not just to help someone with food, but to be able to make her feel comfortable with something she had never done before. As she exited the pantry, I asked, “Can I have a word of prayer with you for your situation?” Without hesitation, she said, “Yes.” I thanked God for allowing us to meet and asked Him to please help her in all things. It was amazing to witness this woman go from being shy and quiet to saying, “Thank you!” in a loud voice. She was so grateful for the help she received.’

Thank you for giving!
